Nepalese retroflex stops: a static palatography study of inter- and intra-speaker variability

چکیده

Retroflex sounds are classically defined as produced with the tongue tip curled backward and often in contact behind the alveolar ridge ([1], [2], [3]). The sounds, however, present a great inter-language, interand intra-speaker articulatory variation. Retroflex stops in Nepali, an Indo-Aryan language spoken in Nepal, are produced with the tongue tip with no backward curling movement at the alveolar ridge ([4],[5]). For Pokharel [5], this is not a real type of retroflexion, but rather is apico-alveolar with no backward curling of the tongue tip. The aim of this study is to experimentally verify Pokharel’s statement and the originality is to go beyond this claim. We wish to verify whether there is any co-articulation effect while producing the retroflex in different vocalic contexts. We use the direct palatography method to determine the place of articulation. Our articulatory data reveal an important articulatory inter and intra speaker variability. The majority of the retroflex stops realized in our study are subapico-post-alveolar in the case of back vowels and apicoalveolar in the case of the front vowels.

A Preliminary Epg Study of Stop Consonants in Arrernte

The Australian Aboriginal language Arrernte has four coronal consonants in the stop, nasal and lateral series. This paper presents EPG data for the four coronal stops of Arrernte in inter-vocalic context for one female speaker of the language. Results show comparatively little variability in the laminal articulations, and comparatively greater variability in the apical articulations. An interes...

Spatial and dynamic aspects of retroflex production: An ultrasound and EMA study of Kannada geminate stops

This study investigates the production of geminate retroflex stops in Kannada using a combination of ultrasound and articulography. Data obtained from 10 native speakers of the language show that the retroflex gesture is dynamically complex and asymmetrical, involving an anticipatory retraction of the tongue tip, followed by the raising of this articulator towards the hard palate, and subsequen...

Implicit training of nonnative speech stimuli.

Learning nonnative speech contrasts in adulthood has proven difficult. Standard training methods have achieved moderate effects using explicit instructions and performance feedback. In this study, the authors question preexisting assumptions by demonstrating a superiority of implicit training procedures. They trained 3 groups of Greek adults on a difficult Hindi contrast (a) explicitly, with fe...

Oral Cavity Enlargement in Retroflex Stops

It is generally recognized that front-articulated stops are more compatible with voicing than backarticulated stops because the larger oral volume and compliance of front stops allows for longer trans-glottal airflow. Phonological patterns suggest that retroflex stops may be an exception to this pattern and may be more compatible with voicing than their dental/alveolar counterparts. An experime...
